NEC Display Announces New Laser Phosphor Digital Cinema Projector

NEC Display Solutions of America recently announced today the availability of the NC1700L in its Digital Cinema Projector Series, a dual-laser digital cinema projector featuring red-blue lasers paired with green phosphor.

Designed for 2D and 3D playback on small to medium screen sizes, the NC1700L projector delivers 14,000 lumens with its industry-first RB laser system. The new laser system features red and blue lasers paired with green phosphor to produce a rich color spectrum.  Laser Phosphor projectors offer reduced total cost of ownership and less maintenance because the RB laser design eliminates the need to replace lamps.

The new laser design offers flexibility in other ways, too. The projector does not require a special exhaust system, and it uses a much wider lens shift ratio without sacrificing image quality. In addition, its connectivity options enable non-cinematic content, such as presentations and games, giving cinema operators options for hosting non-cinema events.

The NC1700L represents the next evolution in laser projection for small to medium sized screens and is the latest addition to the Digital Cinema Projector Series, which also includes the single-laser phosphor NC1201L projector.

The NC1700L is available for purchase now. Also available now is the NC1000C, a compact and silent 2K, DCI-certified digital projector equipped with a S2K chipset from Texas Instruments®, designed for theaters with small screens, booth-less cinema, or mobile theaters.

At ISE 2018, Digital Projection, Inc. launched the Insight Dual Laser 8K projector. With a whopping 7,680 x 4,320 resolution, this new projector is designed for high-end applications requiring the maximum image detail possible, including medical, scientific, immersive visualization and large venue applications. At ISE the projector demo incorporated an Astra image processing receiver and was showing 8K content provided by NHK Japan.

The new projector delivers 25,000 lumens of brightness and features solid-state laser illumination. The Insight Dual Laser 8K uses DLP technology incorporating three 1.38 inch DarkChip DMDs and Digital Projection’s ColorMax technology for life-like color accuracy and deep black levels. These features make the projector ideal for edge-blending and projection mapping applications. The Insight Dual Laser 8K also employs Multi-axis capability and has a range of lenses available, which means that it can be deployed in landscape, portrait or almost any orientation.

The new DPI projector comes with Projector Controller software to allow full management and operation of multiple projectors from a single centralized PC-based application.  Ideal for use in large installations or where projectors are installed in multiple locations within a building, the software can dramatically reduce the time required for set up and configuration.

The Insight Dual Laser is targeted to ship in Q4 2018. Formal pricing has not yet been announced, but the unit is expected to carry a hefty price tag.

Analyst firm PMA Research follows the projector market. While to total projector market was relatively flat in 2017, laser illuminated projectors were a bright spot. Though they only accounted for about 5% of the units shipped, their revenues accounted for about 25% of the market. This is mainly due to the fact that laser illuminated projectors are typically high bright, high resolution models carrying heftier price tags than traditional lamp-based projectors.

Vivitek recently introduced the DU6693Z – a new laser projector designed for large-venue applications such as lecture halls, auditoriums and house of worship. Ideally suited to 24/7 operation, the DU6693Z offers a high 7,000 lumen brightness and WUXGA resolution. In addition, the DU6693Z comes standard with a motorized lens, plus horizontal and vertical shift, a 10-lens position memory for lens shift, as well as eight optional lenses that range from 0.38:1 to 8.26:1 throw ratio. It has also been engineered to support 360 degree/portrait projection mode. Finally, the DU6693Z features HDBaseT connectivity for easy digital transmission and network control.

Vivitek’s DU6693Z employs advanced thermal management technology to improve the projector’s cooling efficiency and effectiveness resulting in a low fan noise of only 32dB at normal mode. The optimized air flow and better cooling means that lower fan speeds are required thanks to the heat or hot air being driven out of the projector in a more efficient way. A further benefit of the DU6693Z’s advanced cooling means that it is better protected from the damages of excessive heat, which adds to it’s lower total cost of ownership.

In addition, the DU6693Z has a fully sealed optical engine. The benefit to end users is it is air-tight, so that tiny dust particles cannot get into the optical engine part, and thus not able to interfere with the DMD chip, which makes the projector much more robust. A further advantage is the improved light efficiency, as the light path to the DMD is not affected by dust particles, which ensures a continuous high brightness level.

Analyst firm PMA Research tracks the sales of projectors through all US channels. Their March 2018 Distributor Tracking report showed that sales of WUXGA large venue projector above 6,000 lumens maintained its domination of revenue share, remaining above 20%. In addition, unit sales of models with 5,000 lumens or more rebounded sharply, as did the average selling price for models in this segment.

Two JVC Projectors are First to Attain THX 4K HDR Certification

JVC has announced that the new JVC Procision Series DLA-NX9 and Reference Series DLA-RS3000 are the first and only display devices to date to achieve THX 4K HDR Certification, the most demanding certification that a display product can achieve. Both models feature JVC’s newest native 4K D-ILA device and the company’s 8K e-shift technology to produce an 8K image on the screen.

HDR content offers significant improvement in image quality with its expanded luminance range, wide color gamut, 10-bit gradation, and other enhancements. THX 4K HDR Certification ensures that a display achieves all that HDR can deliver to provide the most true-to-life video images. THX performs hundreds of tests to confirm color accuracy, sharpness and contrast. A larger DCI-P3 color gamut is required for HDR, and THX 4K HDR Certification ensures that a display truly achieves this new color palette, and with the highest accuracy. Furthermore, 4K HDR displays are evaluated for color and moiré artifacts with full HD and 4K content. Images must match the color, luminance, black levels and gamma seen in the filmmaker’s studio.

A key feature of the new JVC projectors is the Auto Tone Mapping function, which automatically adjusts settings for the optimum HDR10 image. The HDR10 mastering information MaxCLL (Maximum Content Light Level) and MaxFALL (Maximum Frame Average Light Level) varies greatly depending on content. Therefore, in order to achieve the best HDR10 experience it is necessary to set the appropriate brightness settings for each piece of programming. The new Auto Tone Mapping function automatically adjusts settings based on the mastering information. Various HDR images with different brightness can be viewed optimally without manual adjustment of the settings. THX tests for tone mapping to ensure that all content is rendered with precise definition in the brightest and darkest areas. In cases where content does not contain mastering information, a fixed value will be set or it can be manually adjusted.

The DLA-NX9 and the DLA-RS3000 are essentially the same projector with the same specs, and are simply sold through different distribution channels. Specs on these models include e-Shift technology to achieve a resolution of 8192×4320, horizontal and vertical lens shift, 2,200 lumens of brightness and a contrast ratio of 100,000:1. Connectivity includes LAN and RS232-C. The JVC DLA-NX9 and DLA-RS3000 projectors are each priced at $17,999.95.

Analyst firm PMA Research follows the Projector market and publishes monthly and quarterly market reports on market size and display industry trends. The latest Quarterly Projector Manufacturer Forecast published by PMA Research expects that shipments of projectors with 8K resolution will begin to grow exponentially beginning in 2019.

PMA Research All-Displays Tracking Shows Improving Sales Through the Distribution Channel in 2H2020

San Juan Capistrano, California – February 25, 2021.  PMA Research (PMA), the worldwide market information experts on large displays, has published their latest All-Displays sell-through tracking report on professional large-format flat panel displays (32” and larger) and professional projectors (above 500 lumens) being sold by leading U.S. Distributors who serve commercial markets.

The unit volume improvements seen late in the second quarter of 2020 continued into the second half of the year as sales improved markedly when compared to 2Q2020. Fourth quarter sales were nearly flat compared with third quarter, movement that was counter to the usual trend of a much softer fourth quarter versus third quarter.

The mix between projectors and large flat panel displays shifted further toward flat panel displays in the second half of the year. This happened, in part, because two key segments for projection, entertainment venues and education, were partially closed or shifted to online delivery. Many display projects were delayed, and budget resources were either saved or shifted to more pressing needs.

In addition, inexpensive professional TVs doubled market share in the 65-inch and 75-inch product segments.  Pricing pressure forced even lower prices for professional TVs in the 60” and 70” categories.

While monthly trends in 2020 mirrored the stops-and-starts of the economy through the pandemic shutdowns and re-openings, they also quantitatively confirmed the general industry consensus that there was a continued strengthening of the professional AV business as 2020 ended.

PMA’s monthly All-Displays Distributor Tracking report offers timely sell-through data and analysis on unit sales and market trends of projectors and large-format flat panel displays sold by leading U.S. AV and IT Distributors. These reports are ideal for tracking product and channel trends.
